The Patrick County High School Wrestling team competed in the Piedmont District Tournament that was held at Martinsville High School on February 2, and wrestled their way to the school’s first District Wrestling title since 1998. The team as a whole scored 198 points to capture this title.
The Cougars placed 8 wrestlers in the Championship Finals and 4 in the Consolation Finals, for a total of 12 possible top 3 finishers. In these final rounds everyone stepped up and took care of business by earning 12 top 3 finishes and the team title.
Jonathan Culler (106), Ethan Cobbler (120), Stephen Spencer (138), Josh Wright (182), Tristan Hardy (195), and Jaheim Johnson (HWT) all won first place honors in their respective weight classes.
Trent Alexander (126), and Jay Howard (152) finished 2nd in their respective weight classes.
Rawl Mabe (160), Nate Gusler (113), Xavier Torres-Seda (170), and Paul Pascale (220) finished 3rd in their respective weight classes.
The whole team wrestled hard and had a good night with a district championship to prove it.
“Rawl Mabe (160) and Xavier Torres (170) each had an awesome tournament winning 3 matches in their respective weight classes to finish 3rd. Performances like this is why this team has been successful all year. They stepped up big on a night when the team needed it,” said the coaching staff.
This week also finished out the regular season for the Cougars. They finished the season with a 31- 8 dual team record. This was the best finish for a Patrick County Wrestling Team in quite a while.
“We wrestled 39 dual team matches but lost a possible 12 more dual match opportunities due to some adverse things such as inclement weather, and etc.,” said Cougar coaching staff. “This team could have won a possible 40 duals if we had got an extra break here and there. On their way to a 30-win dual team season they also won the Jordan Amos Dual Team Tournament at Tunstall High School, and finished 2nd in their own Cougar Dual Team Tournament.”
Coaching staff also noted that the “young men worked hard and overcame some adversity during these crazy times to finish this regular season on a strong note. We only have two seniors, and our young wrestlers worked hard stepping up big when they needed to in helping this team to be successful. Senior Captains Josh Wright and Jaheim Johnson along with junior captain Tristan Hardy did an excellent job of leading this team. These captains led by example and student athletes do not come any better than these three.
“We are proud of this team and the way they work hard. This group wrestles hard every time they take the mat and that is all you can ask. These young men have not reached their potential yet and with the post season coming up they could surprise some folks. They have represented their school and community well,” staff said.
