The Virginia Peach Festival will be held Friday in Stuart; the Meadows of Dan Folk Fair is slated to be held on Saturday.
Rebecca Adcock, executive director of the Patrick County Chamber of Commerce, said she and others are putting the final touches on the peach fest.
Political opponents incumbent Ninth District U.S. Rep. Morgan Griffith and challenger Anthony Flaccavento, both will be represented at the festival, Adcock said.
Griffith, of the GOP, is the incumbent in the November race. An attorney, Griffith currently is serving his fourth term, after initially winning his seat in 2010.
Flaccavento, a democrat, farmer and small business owner who has been working with communities in Southwest Virginia for more than 30 years, is mounting his second campaign bid to oust Griffith in November.
Organizers in his camp said Flaccavento will be on hand to meet and greet peach fest visitors.
The peach fest includes music by Big Daddy Love and Sunset Drive, vendors with a wide variety of wares, including peach themed items, and contests for the best peach cobbler and the first ever Peach Pit Spitting contest. Wine and beer will also be available at the peach fest on Friday, August 17 at DeHart Park in Stuart.
The 14th annual Folk Fair will be held Saturday, August 18, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Meadows of Dan, with events spread from the Concord Corner Store to the Community Center and beyond.
The Country Boys perform at 2 p.m. at the Meadows Mercantile, and a Blue Ridge Story Space will hold a storytelling event at the Community Center at noon, followed by a performance by Changing Lanes at 2 p.m., also in the Community Center.
Youngsters will delight in inflatable offerings; Meadows of Dan Elementary School will host their annual Fish Fry, Vesta Community Center will offer their famous hot dogs for sale and Stanburn Winery will be on hand for tastings and sales.
Kettle corn, funnel cakes, deep fried Oreos and lemonade will be available, as well as peaches from local orchards and peach cobbler.
