In response to the letter about abortion in last week’s edition, “Abortion has depleted our workforce.” Have you not been paying attention to how many unemployed we have and for how long? How many underemployed people? I cannot imagine what shape we would be in if we had millions more.
“Abortion has used our tax dollars for wrong.” No taxpayer money is used for abortion. There are laws against it!!
“Our nation is violent because our system has taught children for many years it is okay to kill.” From abortion? Not from all the news about people using guns to kill masses of other people? Surely you must be joking. BTW, there were mass shootings before abortion was legalized.
“Our children must again be taught self-control.” During what decade did children loose this self control? My mother went to high school in the ‘50s, which had the highest rate of unplanned pregnancy since we’ve been keeping records. Unplanned pregnancy has gone down by half since I was in high school in the ‘70s.
I’m sure Fran Martin means well. But her approach, like so many of the so-called “pro-lifers” leaves much to be desired. Outlawing abortion will never do a thing to stop it. It will just happen in the back alley again.
What will help is not having unplanned pregnancies in the first place! Does Fran support programs to teach young people about prevention? Does Fran get out and preach that the most important thing you can do for your children is PLAN for them? In a stable, loving relationship?
I know many young Patrick County women get pregnant before they are even 21. It is not unusual to have children by several different fathers before you are even 25. Is anyone getting out and talking to young people? I have/do as a teacher and a foster parent.
Legislation won’t change a thing, but getting out and talking to young people will.
