The Patrick County High School cross country team competed at the Conference 32 Championships last week in Christiansburg. Macie Rogers had a great performance, running with conviction from the gun. She earned All-Conference honors, placing 14th overall and qualifying for the West Regional Championships.
“If Macie races how she did today, she has a very good shot to qualify for the state meet,” said Coach Danel Slaydon. “This was, by far, her best performance of the season.”
The other top 20 performance of the day came from sophomore Montana Moorefield, who placed 20th in the girls’ race. The girls’ team placed fifth and the boys’ team placed sixth overall.
“Our athletes are fully capable of competing with the teams in our conference. Right now, we are losing a lot of ground in the summer. We had a great talk with both teams on Thursday, and decided that full commitment in the summer is one thing that will help us significantly close the gap on our competition,” Slaydon said.
“Instead of an ending, we are treating where we are now as a starting point for next year. We will continue to build momentum and get faster through the indoor and outdoor track seasons, and then commit to building strength and endurance in the summer. If we can do this, we should be in a much better position to compete for regional and state spots in the 2017 season,” Slaydon said.
