Sheppard Allen DeHart, age 90, of Louisburg, N.C., and formerly of Patrick County, passed away Friday, October 14, 2016, at Wake Medical Center in Raleigh, N.C.
He was born in Patrick County on September 3, 1926 to the late Samuel DeHart and Losia Weaver DeHart Elgin. He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Richard Elgin, Moir DeHart, and Willie Lee Elgin.
He was the founder and owner of DeHart Botanical Gardens in Franklin County, N.C., and Patrick County. He was a warrant officer in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He became a preacher in his teens and was a retired professor at Louisburg College.
Surviving are his sister, Virginia Ann Elgin Martin of Woolwine; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held today (Wednesday) at 2 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart. Burial will follow in the Woolwine Cemetery.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Louisburg College’s DeHart Botanical Gardens, 501 N. Main St., Louisburg, NC 27549.
