Patrick County Sheriff Dan Smith opened a July 11 Willis Gap Community Crime Watch meeting. After discussing some local topics of interest, Smith introduced Patrick County deputy Ronnie Williams, who has been with his office for 13 years in August. Williams is a master deputy and the Animal Control Officer. In that role, he works closely with Conservation Police Officer (CPO), Dale Owens, who also is a Special Agent with the US Fish, and Wildlife Service.
Smith noted that in the past, those who held similar positions were called Game Wardens.
“CPOs are fully qualified officers through the Dept of Criminal Justice Services, with the authority to enforce all of the laws of Virginia,” Smith said.
Owens explained that he may also conduct investigations and cross state lines when violations of federal wildlife laws have been committed. He patrols the vast and diverse geographical expanses of the Commonwealth, and is ever vigilant in enforcing the laws related to hunting, fishing, and boating: educating the public, as well as offering assistance in a wide variety of enforcement activities–all to promote a safe environment for citizens and visitors alike to enjoy the abundant natural resources in Virginia.
Owens fielded questions about the deer population, and included some discussion about those suffering with various diseases. He also discussed reports of bears being seen in the area.
