None of the vehicles in the Patrick County Sheriff’s Office fleet are among those subject to a recall initiated by Ford Motor Company, according to Sheriff Dan Smith.
“Our investigators have the civilian Explorer model, not the patrol package like they’re talking about in the recall,” Smith said.
The department buys the civilian models because they are less expensive than the vehicles equipped with the patrol package, he said.
There are three Ford Explorers in the department’s fleet, he said. None of the three are among the models listed.
Smith also noted Dodge Chargers account for the majority of vehicles in the department’s fleet.
According to online reports, some law enforcement agencies said fumes were seeping into the SUVs and sickening officers.
Ford issued a recall on certain models, including Ford Explorer Police Interceptor Utility vehicles equipped with 3.5L GTDI engines.
Ford will notify owners of affected vehicles.
