A winter storm warning is now in effect due to a low-pressure system that is expected to bring wintry precipitation across the Mid Atlantic area Wednesday night through Friday, according to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg.
Significant amounts of snow, sleet, and freezing rain are possible. The precipitation may start as a mix of snow and sleet tonight and change over to freezing rain for most locations by Thursday. Colder air could change the precipitation back to a mix of snow and sleet Thursday night.
Heavy mixed precipitation is expected, with total snow and sleet accumulations of 1 to 3 inches and ice accumulations of one half to three quarters of an inch.
The warning is in effect from midnight Wednesday to 7 a.m. Friday.
Power outages and tree damage are likely due to the ice. Travel could be nearly impossible. The hazardous conditions could impact the morning or evening commute.
Travelers are advised to keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency.
