Smith Mountain Lake State Park

Put your best foot forward and join the nationwide First Day Hikes initiative on New Year’s Day and celebrate the beauty of the outdoors with a refreshing hike at one of Virginia’s state parks.

As part of this annual tradition led by America’s State Parks, parking is free at all Virginia State Park locations on Jan. 1. Visitors will also receive a commemorative sticker, while supplies last, to mark the occasion.

Each park offers something unique—from leisurely strolls to challenging hikes. Whether you’re looking to get some exercise, spend time with family or simply enjoy nature, there’s an adventure for everyone.

New this year, DCR will be hosting a few guided hikes at natural area preserves, which are managed by the Virginia Natural Heritage Program. Visit the special event website for more information on how to reserve your spot for this unique way to kick off the new year.

Take this opportunity to explore the natural, cultural and historical treasures of Virginia State Parks and be inspired to return throughout the year. Whether you prefer a solo adventure or want to join in on the fun of ranger-led hikes and family-friendly activities, our parks have it covered with numerous ways to elevate your experience during your visit. Most parks offer more than one guided hike or program during the day, so be sure to visit the park’s web page for more information.

Here are some activities to consider for your First Day Hike:
• Midnight Hikes at Pocahontas and Lake Anna
• Sunrise Hikes at Widewater, Sky Meadows, Seven Bends and Mason Neck
• Photo Bingo at Powhatan and Machicomoco
• Special Hike with your dog (must be leashed) at High Bridge, Twin Lakes and Shenandoah River
• Wildlife Hikes at Kiptopeke, Chippokes, Caledon
• History Hikes at New River Trail, Staunton River Battlefield, Douthat and Wilderness Road

Dogs are welcome on any of the hikes (unless noted elsewhere) as long as they are on a leash no longer than 6ft. The special hikes with a dog mentioned above, include programs that focus on walking with your dog on the trails so be sure to visit the park’s page for more details.
