Jason Wood, Superintendent of Patrick County Schools, was guest speaker at the Patrick County Retired Teachers meeting held September 16. The meeting was held at the Landmark Center where the group enjoyed a meal prepared by the staff.
Mr. Wood commented on new career and technical programs that have been added to high school curriculum; new resources available in the new school board building that were not available before; the total cost to purchase and renovate the new school board office; and money available through grants and government programs that will directly benefit students. He addressed the fact that teachers receive training that encompasses ways to teach all students of varying ability levels within the same heterogeneous classroom.
New enrichment and remedial programs, such as the Cougar Time Block, have been added at the high school. The Marketplace in the basement of the new school board building houses the food services program where meals can be ordered, and a large meeting room will be available. Volunteer opportunities are always available at the high school. There are opportunities for all students.
Following Mr. Wood’s presentation, the retired teachers held a necrology service for Jean Gilley, a member who recently passed away. Plans for projects to be carried out by the group were finalized. PCRTA donates for graduation attire, birthday bags for Blue Ridge Therapy, to PARC Workshop, Developmental Center, and to a retired teachers’ scholarship.
The retired teachers book club is open to the public and meets every third Wednesday at the library at 11 a.m.
