A North Carolina couple was charged in connection with larceny of a motor vehicle that occurred Friday, Dec. 23, according to Patrick County Sheriff Dan Smith.
Kelly Shane Marion, 34, of Yadkinville, and Crystal Chambers Marion, 32, of Mount Airy, are both being held in the Surry County jail under a $40,000 bond.
The alleged vehicle larceny occurred in Patrick County, Smith said.
Lt. Rob Coleman responded to On The Run convenience store on Blue Ridge Street around 8:30 a.m. to investigate a report of a 2000 Ford Excursion SUV larceny.
Smith said that the driver of the vehicle had parked in front of the store and briefly went inside to make a purchase. When the driver came out of the store, the vehicle was gone, according to Smith. The owner of the vehicle was notified shortly after that, Smith said.
While Coleman was gathering information at the scene, the owner of the vehicle spotted it on Virginia/NC 103 near the state line, and followed the vehicle into Mount Airy.
The owner of the vehicle watched as her vehicle crashed, and then she said she saw the suspects flee on foot, Smith said. The owner pursued the suspects on foot until she apprehended them, with help from the Mount Airy Police Department, according to Smith.
“I am glad that the victim was not seriously hurt during this incident,” Smith said. “It could have ended badly.”
Multiple charges also were filed in Mount Airy in connection with the Dec. 23 incident, Smith said of charges that include assault, leaving the scene of an accident and reckless driving.
Felony motor vehicle theft warrants obtained by Coleman will be served on the couple when they are extradited to Patrick County, the sheriff said. He added that the investigation is continuing.
