Donald Trump has been lying to the American people since he announced his run for President in 2015 and Morgan Griffith has been amplifying these lies to the voters of the 9th Congressional District since he saw that riding Trump’s coattails might be the easiest way to keep his seat in Congress. Never mind his oath to support and defend the Constitution, never mind his duty to serve his constituents (all of them, not just those who voted for him), never mind truth, never mind common, human decency. Morgan Griffith has shown us, time and again, and especially during these weeks following the November election, that he will do and say literally anything to hang on to power.
Morgan Griffith knows very well that Joe Biden is the winner of the 2020 Presidential election. He knows that every objection, every court challenge that the Trump campaign raised in states from Arizona to Pennsylvania was rejected by duly elected or appointed election officials and by state and federal judges, including the Supreme Court. Donald Trump knows that he lost the election, but he began laying the groundwork for the big lie of saying the election was stolen from him even before the first votes were cast. For Morgan Griffith to ignore his oath and his duty to the Constitution and join in the baseless and harmful efforts to challenge the electoral outcome in various states that Donald Trump lost is the height of hypocrisy and arrogance. These efforts went beyond words, with Griffith voting to reject electors from states whose elections had been legally conducted, whose results were counted and recounted and audited and whose results had been duly certified.
Words-and votes—have consequences. We saw on January 6 what can happen when an unscrupulous politician like Donald Trump manufactures a crisis by lying about the election results and then whips up his followers to take matters in their own hands by marching on the U.S. Capitol to stop the counting of the electoral votes. Five people died. The United States lost, perhaps forever, its position as the world’s leading democracy and a beacon of hope around the world.
Morgan Griffith has done great damage to the Constitution, to our political system, and to the people of the 9th Congressional District. He does not deserve to remain in Congress.
