The Patrick County High School track and field team competed at the Cosmopolitan Championships in Roanoke last week. This prestigious meet draws the most talented runners, jumpers and throwers from the Roanoke Valley.
“We always like to be in the hunt for a to-10 spot at Cosmo,” said Coach Danel Slaydon. “Due to SAT testing and a few mild injuries, we brought a small squad but still had five athletes crack in to the top-five,” he said.
Kristian Reynolds was second in a very exciting middle school mile race that came right down to the wire. Reanna Carico continued to shine in her debut season, throwing a personal record (PR) to place third in the discus. Matt Amos performed extremely well under pressure, throwing 111 ft. PR in his final throw to take fourth in the discus.
Armonte Carter closed aggressively to take fourth in the 400. Juan Cisneros went toe to toe with the best in the state in a loaded mile, placing fifth in a race that saw the top five separated by less than half of a second.
“Our kids continue to make big gains in confidence as we inch closer to the championship season. We are really looking forward to Conference this week,” Slaydon said. “Our kids are ready to perform and fight for Regionals,” he added.
