It was common during World War II, the Korean War and Vietnam era for young men — and some women — to leave high school and enlist in the military. Many returned home and never got their diploma.
“A lot of these folks were gone for a few years … and when they did get back home they got a job and did what they had to,” said William D. Sroufe, Patrick County Public Schools Division Superintendent. “Hopefully, we can honor them by presenting them with a diploma.”
As graduation season approaches, Leigh Ann Hazelwood, Director of Adult Education; and the leadership of Patrick County Public Schools are seeking veterans who may have enlisted before graduating from high school and qualify for the program.
The recognition program, created by state education law, recognizes the devotion and sacrifice of World War II, Korean War, and Vietnam-era veterans who left school early by presenting them with a honorary high school diploma.
To be eligible, a veteran must meet the following requirements:
- Be a Virginia state resident.
- Was engaged in active duty service for at least one day during one of the following wartime periods: World War II: Dec. 7, 1941 to Dec. 31, 1946; Korea: June 27, 1950 to Jan. 31, 1955; Vietnam: May 1, 1961 to April 30, 1975.
- Received a satisfactory discharge from military service.
Family members can also receive diplomas for deceased veterans. The child or spouse of a deceased veteran who meets the criteria may apply and accept a posthumous diploma on the veteran’s behalf.
Qualifying veterans or their family members must present evidence of the veteran’s military service, including dates of service and discharge status. Acceptable verifying documents include a DD Form 214 (the Department of Defense discharge form), a WD AGO Form 53-55 form (enlisted record and report of separation), an honorable discharge certificate or a special discharge form from the Coast Guard or Merchant Marines.
Hazelwood said while many veterans may be unaware of the program, school officials are hoping to recognize many Patrick County residents for their service with a Veterans Honorary High School Diploma this spring.
Interested veterans should contact LeighAnn Hazelwood, Director of Adult Education, at (276) 694.6542 or honorary.diploma@patrick.k12.va.us by April 1.
