Another weekend brush fire took out an acre’s worth of woods in Woolwine Saturday. Woolwine Volunteer Fire Department Chief Bennett Shuff said the call for a fire on Lone Ivy Road near Bowling Store Road went out at 3:22 p.m.
Firefighters had the fire under control in about two hours. They stayed an additional two hours to make sure it was fully extinguished. The fire was on top of a hill, Shuff said, and not near any roads or homes. He said the fire could have been started by hunters, but no one is really sure how it began.
Responding to the fire were nine firefighters from Fairystone Volunteer Fire Department, six from Woolwine, and members of the Smith River Rescue Squad.
The Patrick County and the Town of Stuart burning bans remain in effect as of Monday night. “Dry as it’s been,” Shuff said. “We’re holding our breath we don’t have anything worse than that.”
