Zettie Helms Martin, age 87, formerly of Meadows of Dan, Virginia, and lately a resident at Commonwealth Senior Living in Hillsville, passed away on Monday, October 26, 2020. She was born Zettie Lorene Helms, one of seven siblings, to the late John Thomas and Annie Edith Jones Helms, in the Meadows of Dan area of Floyd County, on June 12, 1933. She graduated from Meadows of Dan High School in 1954.
Zettie worked in textile manufacturing for many years, most latterly at the DuPont Nylon factory in Martinsville, until the late 1980s, when she retired to care for her aging mother at home.
A friend to many, Zettie was incredibly social and gregarious, enjoying nothing more than conversation. She also loved feeding birds, cultivating her favorite house and garden plants, and caring for her cats, Goldie and Patches.
Zettie was predeceased by her husband, Grover (Ted) Martin, five brothers, and a sister. She is survived by her closest remaining family members, nephews Travis Knowles of Florence, SC and Bradley Knowles of Tucson, AZ.
Due to COVID-19, there will not be a memorial service at this time. Burial arrangements are by Gardner Funeral Home in Floyd, with interment in the Meadows of Dan Baptist Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations by check to the caretaker of Zettie’s beloved cat, Patches:
