Surry Community College held its 53rd commencement ceremony in the gymnatorium on the Dobson campus on May 15.
Associate in Applied Science degrees, diplomas, or certificates were awarded to students who completed one of the career technology programs. Associate in General Education degrees were awarded to students who completed two years of education designed for academic enrichment and personal growth and development. Associate in Arts or Associate in Science degrees were awarded to students who completed a college transfer program.
Dr. David Shockley, Surry Community College President, gave the commencement address and presented degrees, diplomas and certificates to the 98 students who participated in the ceremony including fall, spring, and summer graduates for the 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 school years. Summit Strings performed musical selections during the ceremony.
Several students were recognized at the ceremony for receiving awards and recognitions.
This spring, Surry had 455 graduates; 130 of which received honors for having a 3.5 GPA and higher. The college awarded 191 Associate in Applied Science degrees, 25 Associate in General Education degrees, 129 transfer degrees, 53 diplomas, and 222 certificates.
Local residents include Alexandria Boyd, of Ararat, Business Administration; and Robert Mitchell, of Stuart, for Electrical Systems Technology – Electrical Track (Cert).
This year’s ceremony also included 2019-2020 graduates that wished to participate since their ceremony was canceled due to the COVD-19 pandemic.
The 2019-2020 academic year had 511 graduates; 157 of which received honors for having a 3.5 GPA and higher. The college awarded 201 Associate in Applied Science degrees, 18 Associate in General Education degrees, 213 transfer degrees, 42 diplomas, and 184 certificates.
Local students include Alexandria Boyd, with a degree in Accounting and Finance; and Paul Evans with certificates in Mechatronics Engineering Technology and a diploma in Mechatronics.
Both Boyd and Evans are of Ararat.
Robert Mitchell, of Stuart, was awarded a certificate in AC/Heat/Refrigeration.
