Mr. Burnie Carl Epperson, 92, of Ararat, VA, passed away Wednesday night, October 30, 2024, at Blue Ridge Therapy Connection in Stuart, VA.
Mr. Epperson was born February 14, 1932, in Patrick County, VA, the youngest of nine children born to the late William Moses and Elizabeth “Lizzie” Collins Epperson. Burnie served our country in the United States Army with honor during the early 50s. He was a member and past commander of the local Disabled American Veterans organization, where he advocated for fellow veterans and their families. He retired as a welder from Siemens Westinghouse after many years of service and was a member of Grace Moravian Church.
He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Bettie Smith Chilton Epperson; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Gene and Janice Epperson, Steven Epperson, and Dan and Becky Epperson; a stepson and his wife, Michael and Lora Chilton; his grandchildren, Kelly and John Lang, Ashley and Scott Creel, Lauren Epperson, and Lynette and Herb Goins; his step grandchildren, Michael Landon and Ivey Chilton and Elizabeth Marin and James; two great-grandchildren, Millie Lang and Daniel Creel; a sister-in-law, Judy Jackson; a brother-in-law, William “Crab” Smith; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Epperson was preceded in death by his first wife, Glenna Smith Epperson; and eight siblings, Goston Epperson, Carlene Hill, Tom Epperson, George Epperson, Arthur Epperson, Catherine Dalton, Cabel Epperson, and Roscoe Epperson.
The funeral service will be held Monday, November 4, 2024, at 2:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, with the Rev. Arlis Thomas officiating. At the conclusion of the service, military honors will be conducted by the VFW Memorial Honor Guard. The family will receive friends Sunday from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at the funeral home.
