Sheriff reports about half are from Patrick County

Patrick County Circuit Court Judge Martin Clark on Monday unsealed the more than 300 indictments on alleged drug-related offenses handed down by grand jurors March 6.

As of Monday, approximately 71 of the 98 people named in the indictments had been arrested, Patrick County Sheriff Dan Smith said.

The arrests stemmed from an 18-month investigation led by Sgt. Eric O’Connell and Investigator Nicholas Pendleton, according to a release. About half of those named are from Patrick County, according to Smith. He added this was the largest narcotics operation conducted by his office.

“Over the past eight years, we have arrested and successfully prosecuted more than 400 people who chose to sell drugs in Patrick County,” Smith said. “If you are selling and haven’t been caught yet, your day is coming. Our community will not tolerate this, our county is a wonderful place to live and raise a family, and this office is committed to keeping it that way.”

Smith said his office was one of a dozen law-enforcement agencies participating in the March 9 “widespread manhunt” to arrest those indicted. Other participating agencies included the Henry County Sheriff’s Office, Martinsville Police Department, Carroll County Sheriff’s Office, Grayson County Sheriff’s Office, Surry County, N.C. Sheriff’s Office, Stokes County, N.C. Sheriff’s Office, Virginia State Police, Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, U.S. Marshal Service (USMS), Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF), and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).

An indictment is not an indication of guilt, but a grand jury’s finding that enough evidence exists for trial.

Those named in the indictments are:
