With the new school year underway, the Patrick County Sheriff’s Office is reminding drivers to use extra caution during the morning and afternoon commutes.
Motorists should expect increased traffic around schools, more pedestrians, school buses making frequent stops and children crossing roadways.
When approaching a stopped school bus with its red lights flashing and stop arm extended, drivers must stop. Motorists should be especially alert on rural roads and in areas where visibility may be limited.
The sheriff’s office also encourages drivers to slow down, stay alert, allow extra time to reach their destinations and avoid distractions.
“Let’s start the new school year off right and make safety a priority throughout Patrick County,” the sheriff’s office said. “Please slow down. Stay alert. Watch for buses. Protect our children.”
The sheriff’s office wishes students, teachers, parents and school staff a safe and successful school year.
