Clarence Odell Overby, age 70, of Stuart, died Sunday, May 29, 2016, at Pioneer Community Hospital in Stuart.
He was born in Stokes County, N.C., on August 29, 1945 and was a son of the late George Dewey and Betsy Martin Overby. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Jessie Mae Overby; and a brother, Russell Flinchum Overby.
He had retired from United Elastic/J.P. Stevens and Narroflex Corp. in Stuart with 52 years of service. He had been an active member of Minnie’s Chapel Wesleyan Church for 48 years where he held many offices including local church board member, vice-chairman of the church board, church trustee, Sunday school superintendent, Sunday school teacher, building committee member, church choir member and lawncare and maintenance man for the church and parsonage. He also did lawn service for others in the community.
He was presently attending Middle Cross Missionary Baptist Church where he helped build the church, was a member of the choir and a parking attendant. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and brother.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years and eight months, Phyllis Clark Overby of the home; one son and daughter-in-law, Stephen and Tabitha Overby of Patrick Springs; one granddaughter, Amanda Lynn Overby of the home; two step-grandchildren, Tyler Spencer and Heather Spencer of Patrick Springs; one sister, Mozelle Owens of Westfield, N.C.; two brothers, John Lester Overby and wife Lois, and James Vester Overby, all of Lawsonville, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held today (Wednesday) at 11 a.m. at Middle Cross Missionary Baptist Church with the Revs. Mike Morrison, Gary Combs and Thomas Bocock officiating. Burial will follow in Minnie’s Chapel Wesleyan Church Cemetery.
