obit Handy, Charlie GCharlie Gilmer Handy, age 74, of Stuart, died Sunday, May 29, 2016, at his home after a long illness.
He was born in Patrick County on September 22, 1941 and was a son of the late William Alonza Handy and Crystal Elizabeth Rorrer Handy. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Denver “Dink” Handy and Hassell Handy; a sister, Elsie Hodges; and three brothers-in-law, Raymond Vaughn, Elgin Hodges and Hugh Sutphin.
He was a member of True Gospel Baptist Church and will be remembered by all who knew him as a friend who would do anything for you at any time.
Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Betty Lawless Handy of the home; one son, Charles Robert Handy of Stuart; one daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Joseph Spangler of Stuart; two grandchildren, Jordan and Mary Spangler and Kirsten Spangler; one great-granddaughter, Mia Rose Spangler; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Garland and Essie Handy of Ridgeway, Leon and Nellie Handy of Stuart, and Billy and Debbie Handy of Stuart; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Donice Vaughn of Roanoke, Betty and David Biggs of Patrick Springs, and Mary and David Young of Stuart; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held today (Wednesday) at 2 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with Pastors J.R. Shelton and Mark Wright officiating. Burial will follow in Mayo Mountain Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home, and at other times at the home.
If desired, memorials may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice. The family would like to send a special thank you to Mountain Valley Hospice and Sally Smith.
