For students seeking to become Patrick Henry Scholars for the 2020/21 year, Patrick Henry Community College will be accepting applications starting February 1 and ending on March 31. As one of the highest honors PHCC offers students, the Patrick Henry Scholar distinction provides the recipients with two years of free tuition at PHCC and the opportunity to join an elite group of scholars. Scholars are selected for their exemplary academic achievement and leadership abilities in high school.
For the 2019/20 year, PHCC honored eleven students as Patrick Henry Scholars. These recipients all graduated from Patrick County High School with a grade point average of 3.7 or higher.
The 2019/2020 Patrick Henry Scholars are:
Jessica Amos volunteers with the Martinsville Henry County SPCA and is a member of the Cowboy Mounted Shooting Association and the Borla Equestrian Team. In high school, Amos was a Governor’s Early College Scholar, the vice-president of the Spanish Club, the captain of the JV Basketball team, and a member of the PCHS Fishing Team. After PHCC, Jessica plans to transfer to Ferrum College to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Animal Sciences. She then plans to attend Veterinary School at Virginia Tech. One day, she intends to return to Patrick County and open a large animal veterinary clinic.
Allison Boyd is a frequent volunteer in her church and at the Landmark Center. In high school, she was on the academic honor roll and a member of the Beta Club. Boyd was also a member of the Spanish Club and Praise and Worship Team. She played varsity softball and was on the track and field and cross-country team. In her senior year, Boyd earned her Virginia State Cosmetology license. At PHCC, Boyd is studying Entrepreneurship and Small Business with the intention of becoming a salon owner and business manager upon graduation.
Brooklynn Caviness graduated from PCHS on the academic honor roll and as a member of the BETA Club. Brooklynn was also secretary of the Spanish Club. She played varsity basketball and softball and was on a travel softball team. Brooklynn is now enrolled in PHCC’s nursing program. Her goal is to complete a bachelor’s degree and become a nurse anesthetist.
Logan Dalton graduated from PCHS on the academic honor roll and as a member of the BETA Club. He was also a member of the Spanish Club, Praise and Worship Team, and the Varsity Club. For two years, he was team captain of the varsity soccer team. Now, Dalton is a member of the PHCC soccer team and studying Business Administration at PHCC. He plans to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Business and become a pharmaceutical sales representative.
Lydia Gunter graduated from PCHS on the academic honor roll. Gunter was a member of the BETA Club, the Interact Club, and the Praise and Worship Team. She was MVP and team captain on the varsity soccer team. Gunter volunteers at Northern Hospital of Surry County. At PHCC, she is enrolled in the General Studies program and plans to one day become a medical sonographer.
Samantha Helms graduated from PCHS on the academic honor roll. She was a member of the BETA Club, the Health Occupations Students of America Club, the Spanish Club, and the Varsity Club. Helms was also team captain of the Varsity Softball team. She has been in Girl Scouts for thirteen years. While in high school, she earned her Certified Nursing Assistant license. Samantha is now enrolled in the nursing program at PHCC and plans to complete a bachelor’s degree in nursing and work as a NICU nurse at Brenner’s Children Hospital.
Allyson Lawson graduated from PCHS on the academic honor roll. She received the Superintendent’s award for outstanding achievements in U.S. Government. Lawson was a member of the BETA Club, Band Club, Spanish Club, and Drama Club. She was in the concert band and marching band serving as section leader and Lieutenant Captain. Lawson was also in Girl Scouts for twelve years where she received bronze, silver and gold awards. She is now enrolled in the Early Childhood Development program with plans of becoming an elementary school teacher.
Ashlee Mesot graduated from PCHS on the academic honor roll. During high school, she was a member of the BETA Club and historian of the Spanish Club. Mesot was a varsity cheerleader, team captain of the volleyball team, and in the flag corps of the marching band. Now, Mesot is a member of the PHCC volleyball team and a nursing student. After PHCC, she plans to complete a bachelor’s degree and work in a local hospital.
Montana Moorefield graduated PCHS on the academic honor roll. She was the treasurer, historian, and reporter for her high school Student Government Association and the senior class secretary. Moorefield also was a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and the Praise and Worship team. She played on the varsity softball team and on the Indoor track and cross-country team. She set a high school record in the 4×400 relay and the 4×800 relay and was All-State in Indoor track. Moorefield also earned her State Cosmetology license in her senior year. Now, she plays on the PHCC softball team and runs her own photography business. She is currently studying Management at PHCC and plans to one day earn her bachelor’s degree in Business.
Faith Stowe graduated from PCHS on the academic honor roll. She received the Superintendents Academic Award and the Outstanding Theatre Student award. Stowe was a member of the Student Government Association, the BETA Club, the Praise and Worship Team. She also served as captain of the marching band Color Guard and joined the yearbook staff. After PHCC, Stowe intends to transfer to Liberty University to study psychology.
Oceana Torres graduated from PCHS on the academic honor roll. In high school, she received academic awards in World History, Pre-Calculus, Anatomy and English. She was a member of the BETA Club, Concert Choir, and the Spanish Club where she served as club historian in her senior year. Now, Torres is enrolled in PHCC’s nursing program. When she finishes at PHCC, she plans to transfer to James Madison University to complete her bachelor’s degree in nursing.

Applicants must have a high school GPA of 3.0 or greater and must be planning to start at PHCC in Fall 2020.
