The Colonel Abram Penn Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution met April 11, 2022 at Poppy’s at Meadows of Dan in Meadows of Dan, Virginia. Regent Janice Stanley presided at the meeting. The program for the meeting, “Rock Castle, A Sense of Place,” was presented by local historian, Leslie Shelor, who has close ties to the former community. The community of Rock Castle was one of subsistence farmers and small mill owners and existed from the 1820s until its demise in the 1930s when it was displaced by the construction of the Blue Ridge Parkway. “What’s wonderful about the fact that the Park Service bought this property is that we can go back—go back to cemeteries, to the house sites and show other people, which we could not have done if it had gone into other private hands,” Shelor remarked. She is the narrator of the one hour documentary film “Rock Castle Home” which celebrates Appalachian heritage. The chapter business meeting included the election of officers. The following members were elected: Chapter Regent, Ann McConnell; First Vice-Regent, Janice Stanley; Second Vice-Regent and Corresponding Secretary, Lucy Rudd; Treasurer and Recording Secretary, Betty Banks; Registrar and Librarian, Sheree Russo; Chaplain and Historian, Diane Ross. Installation of officers will take place in May.
