Bruce was born on May 17, 1965 in Washington, D.C. to the late Frederick Whitfield Schmidt and Marilee Janelle Schmidt. He leaves his beloved wife, Brigitte Mary (Dorr) and their three children: daughters, Olivia Janelle Schmidt and Margaret Grace “Maggie” Schmidt, and son, Henry Robert Schmidt. Bruce was predeceased by his maternal grandparents, Guy and Emogene Owens, and his paternal grandparents, Grace and Frederick Schmidt.

Bruce attended public schools in Waldorf, Md., graduating from Thomas Stone High School in 1983. He played trumpet and euphonium in the school bands from elementary to high school and was captain of the high school football team, the Cougars. In 1987, he graduated from the University of Maryland, College Park with a bachelor’s degree in marketing. He also held a master’s degree in information management systems from University of Maryland University College. For nearly thirty years, Bruce was employed by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security as a program manager. Previously, he served as the national boating statistician for the U.S. Coast Guard. Earlier he had been in pharmaceutical sales for Smith Kline (now SmithKline Beckman). His first job out of college was in sales with 3M Corp., in Virginia Beach, Va. A devout Christian and family man, and a lover of classical music, Bruce started each day studying the Bible. He was an active member of St. Agnes Catholic Church of Shepherdstown, WV.
