*Tunstall Too Much for Cougars
The Boys Varsity Cougars hosted Tunstall Friday, January 6, falling to Trojans, 49-72. Jaivontae Penn led the Cougars with 16 points, 3 rebounds, 1 steal, and 1 block. David Smith had 13 points, 7 rebounds, 6 steals, and 3 assists. T.J. Wimbush had 4 points, 4 rebounds, and 2 assists, while Jalen Hagwood had 4 points and 2 steals. Michael Nelson and Demontez Hill had 3 points each and Armondo Cisneros, George Payton Stovall, and Jackson Barbour had 2 points each.
*Lady Cougars Roll Past Tunstall
The Lady Cougars travelled to Tunstall Friday, January 6, rolling to a 54-3 win over the Lady Trojans. Aniya Penn led the Lady Cougars with 11 points, 9 steals, and 2 rebounds.
Allanah Mitchell had 8 points and 2 steals. Lilly Hazelwood had 6 points, 5 rebounds, 2 steals, and 1 assist. Eliza Clifton had 6 points, 5 steals, 4 rebounds, and 2 assists.
“It was a good team win for our kids. Everyone played a lot and contributed. I thought we passed up a lot of shots in favor of better shots for a teammate, and that’s a good thing,” said Head Coach Donnie Rakes.
*Cougar Boys Get Big Win Over Magna Vista
The Cougars Boys Varsity Basketball Team got a huge 72-67 win in Ridgeway, Tuesday, January 3. Jaivontae Penn and David Smith put up 19 points each for Patrick County. George Payton Stovall had 7 points, while Jalyn Hagwood and Michael Nelson had 6 points each. The Cougars were hot behind the three-point line. Smith had 3, Hagwood and Nelson had 2, and Penn and Demontez Hill had 1 each behind the arc.
Coach Brian Chitwood said he was excited about the win. “Our kids played their hearts out tonight! It was a hard-fought basketball game. We got out to a 9-point lead at the half,” he said. “Magna Vista battled back and tied it up at the end of the 3rd on a stick back at the buzzer. Our kids shot the ball well tonight, and Jai Penn distributed the ball well also, with 13 assists. We will go back to work and prepare for another good basketball team, the Tunstall Trojans, on Friday.”
*Varsity Girls Fall to Warriors
The Lady Cougars hosted Magna Vista on Tuesday, January 3, losing 27-55 to the Lady Warriors.
Magna Vista took control from tip-off, and Patrick County was never able to overcome the deficit.
Missy Hazard led the Cougars with 13 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, and 1 steal. Aniya Penn had 4 points, 2 rebounds, 2 steals, and 1 assist. Lilli Cobbler had 4 points, 1 rebound, and 1 assist.
Coach Donnie Rakes said, “We took a good, old-fashioned whooping in the 2nd half from a very tough, well-coached squad in Magna Vista. Hats off to them. They simply played harder than we did. Hopefully, we will learn from this and be better off for it going forward.”
