Lena Nichols accompanied her grandfather, Tommy Nichols (guitar), with her fiddle, playing bluegrass like “Boil Them Cabbage Down,” and later, the two sang “My Blue Ridge Cabin, Mountain Home,” during the Jan. 6 Open Jam session at the Willis Gap Community Center.

Open Jams are held on Fridays at the center, located at 144 The Hollow Road, Ararat, VA. The doors open at 6 p.m., with concessions like for fresh slaw, chili, hotdogs, chips, candies, sodas, coffee, and bottled water.

Appalachian (acoustic) music and dancing start at 7 p.m. Enjoy the music, family fun, food, fellowship, and dancing, as well as participating in the 50/50 drawing, which is held around 8:30 p.m.
