PC Girls Lose in Danville
The Lady Cougars travelled to Danville to take on the Lady Eagles Tuesday, January 10. Patrick County had an 11-8 lead at the end of the 1st, but GW stepped it up getting a 55-44 win over the Cougars. Aniya Penn had 12 points, 7 rebounds, 3 steals, and 1 assist for PC. Kimora Wimbush had 8 points, 7 rebounds, and 2 steals. Missy Hazard had 6 points, 5 rebounds, 6 assists, and 2 steals.
“It was a good high school basketball game,” said Coach Donny Rakes. “It was close throughout. They made just a few more runs in the second half than we did. We played hard, but they were just a little better than we were tonight. Proud of the effort.”
Lady Cougars Fall to Floyd
Floyd County hosted the Patrick County Cougars on Thursday, January 12, where the Lady Cougars suffered a 33-61 loss. The Lady Buffaloes had a big 1st quarter, outscoring the Cougars 23-6, followed by a big 3rd quarter where they outscored PC 22-8.
Coach Donny Rakes said, “Floyd is a really good basketball team with two outstanding college bound players. Hats off to them. They are just quite a bit better than we are at this point. I thought my kids played hard and showed a great attitude throughout the game. You play hard and care, and good things are in the future. I was proud of our effort.”
The Lady Cougars are 7-7 on the season overall and 4-2 in Piedmont District.
Cougar Boys Get Road Win
The Varsity Cougar Boys travelled to Chatham Monday, January 9, getting an 80-72 win over the Cavaliers. Jaivontae Penn had 27 points, 9 of those behind the 3-point line, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists. George Payton Stovall had 19 points and 7 rebounds. David Smith had 10 points and 15 rebounds. T.J. Wimbush had 8 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 steals. Jalen Hagwood and Michael Nelson had 6 points each. Coach Brian Chitwood said, “It was a solid effort by everyone tonight. We jumped out to a big lead in the 2nd quarter, but to Chatham’s credit, they made a strong run and cut the lead to 1 point in the 4th quarter. However, the guys held on and closed it out. Big win for our young men tonight.”
