The Patrick County High Golf Team, led by Chance Corns’ 74, bested Bassett on August 30 at Gordon Trent Golf Course.
“This is our lowest team score all year,” said Cougar coach, Philip Steagall, of his team’s performance in their victory. Lauren Worley and Parker Roop added 81s, with Kendra Worley shooting 85, for a team total of 321.
Bassett’s Isaac Rodgers was the match medalist with a 71, with his team finishing at 372.
“We’re making progress and playing well,” said Steagall. I’m very proud of them for what they’ve done, and the hard work they’ve put in.”
Of what’s ahead for the Cougars, Steagall said matches at Olde Mill Golf Course and Great Oaks Country Club in Floyd will help them prepare for postseason tournaments.
“That’s kind of the way we set it up, so we could play at Olde Mill and Floyd toward the end of the year,” said Steagall of the postseason host courses, “so we can spend as much time there as we could.”
As for now, Steagall likes what he sees from his team. “We just got to continue coming out every day to get a little better. We’ve got to keep trying to bunch our scores in the 80s and we’ll be ok.”
