Hundreds of high school cross country runners from all over the region met at the 10th Annual Bengal Clash at the River, held at the Smith River Sports Complex in Axton. For the Patrick County Cougars, it was another solid performance.

Patrick’s boys’ team ran well against strong competition, finishing third out of the sixteen teams competing, behind only meet winner Cave Spring and runner-up, Bassett.

Hunter Martin led the way for the Cougars, finishing sixth. With 137 racers competing, the Cougars placed five runners in the top 50. Noah Hiatt finished tenth, Fisher Martin came in 18th, Moises Cisneros crossed the line in 24th and Greely Terry in 44th. Thomas Fulcher from Bassett finished first with a meet record time of 16:18.76.

The girls race started with 107 runners, with the field spreading out as they covered the 3.1-miles of rolling terrain. Patick High runner Sadie Martin ran a strong race, keeping pace with the leaders throughout. Martin crossed the finish line in third place, just twenty-seven seconds behind the winner, Carol-Anne Garrett from Galileo High in Danville.

Mackenzie Williams finished 32nd for the Cougars, with Lexus Owens coming in 48th.

In the team competition, the Cougars finished in 9th place with Cave Spring taking first.
