The public is invited to attend “Living with Black Bears,” a free program scheduled for Saturday, July 26, from 10:30 a.m. to noon. The event will be held in the Community Room at Patrick & Henry Community College’s Stuart campus.
Presented in partnership with the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources, the Southwest Piedmont Master Naturalists, and the Dan River Basin Association, the program will explore black bear characteristics, common encounters, and how to manage bear-related nuisances.
Regina Flora, M.S., VMN, will lead the program. A graduate of Old Dominion University with a Master of Science in Occupational and Technical Studies with a concentration in education, Flora is a Certified Virginia Master Naturalist. She currently serves as Education Outreach Chair for the Southwest Piedmont Master Naturalist chapter and is also a Project Learning Tree facilitator.
Flora has a passion for exploring diverse environments around the world. At home, she tends her gardens, enjoys nature walks, and is an avid birdwatcher.
Black bears are native to Virginia, with a state population estimated between 8,000 and 20,000. Across North America, their numbers are estimated at approximately 900,000. As stewards of the natural environment, it’s our responsibility to coexist with and protect this remarkable species.
Join the program to learn fascinating facts about black bears and how to live safely alongside them. Light refreshments will be served.
