The Patrick County School Board heard an update on the potential closure of a section of Dogwood Road in front of Hardin Reynolds Memorial School (HRMS) at its Tuesday, July 15, meeting.
Schools Superintendent Jason Wood said the Patrick County Board of Supervisors agreed at its July 14 meeting to allow the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) to hold a public hearing on the potential closure.
“They’re [VDOT] also going to provide additional options to be considered,” he said.
The public hearing will be held during the Board of Supervisors’ September meeting.
“But I think the good thing we took away from last night is even some people who are not in favor of closing up the road made comments such as, ‘People fly 60 miles an hour through there, something needs to be done.’ So, I think now we’re all on the same page that something has to be done, and we’re going to do whatever it takes to ensure the safety of staff, students and families of Hardin Reynolds,” Wood said.
The road in question lies directly in front of HRMS and has been the subject of ongoing safety discussions.
In other business, the board:

* Approved the consent agenda.

* Approved the amended personnel report.
Chairman Amy Walker, of the Mayo River District, attended the meeting virtually.
