For such a short month, the Patrick County Library was a busy place to be. During our first full week back after the snow, we had a Valentines craft program and Book Bingo. Special thank you to all who attended and participated.
Norma Bozenmayer, Dayna Gibson, and Julie Curier, who are all Southwest Piedmont Master Naturalists, hosted a Virginia DWR program named Living with Black Bears in Virginia. We had spectators from all ages, who were able to learn about the reasons why we are seeing bears more often than before and what to do, should anyone run up on a black bear in the wild. It was a very informative program and these ladies did a wonderful job not only teaching but engaging the group with items to pass around.
Movie Trivia Night was another hit. Abby created questions ranging from Disney movies to current blockbusters. It is such a fun night and the winners went home with an “Oscar”, bags of popcorn, a movie and some candy. Our second hosted program of the month was affectionately called Caffeinated and Carbed, hosted by Cheri Henry of Henry’s Fresh Roast and Elizabeth Stancescu, of Dragon’s Beard Farm and Camp. This program was well attended by guests who were able to taste Brazilian, Peruvian and Columbian coffees, paired with brownies, oatmeal cranberry cookies and lemon cake, which were all gluten free. The goal was to learn about how to pair coffee with different desserts to enhance flavor and experience. Everyone in attendance was given a worksheet with pairing notes, so the experience could continue with them at home.
On Thursday, February 26th, we had several people attend the Basic Technology Part 2 Series where I answered questions about smart phones. I went over a brief overview on apps, settings, attaching pictures to texts or emails and how to use QR codes. The following day, I hosted the monthly Senior Social, where we had a recipe swap. Some of the items we snacked on were “Crack” Chicken, a delicious, addictive crock pot meal with corn, black beans, Rotel, chicken, a Ranch packet and cream cheese (you can find the recipe on Pinterest). We also had a lemon, blueberry pound cake with a subtle, sweet icing and some yummy sausage rolls. Conversation was aplenty and everyone left with recipes.
It was a great month, full of laughs, learning and meeting new people. If you haven’t been by the Patrick County Library lately, you are totally missing out. Come by and see us.
Until next month, happy reading!
