Virginia Tech’s Reynolds Homestead will launch its spring College for Older Adults session on April 20. The biannual program strives to offer cultural, intellectual, social and fitness opportunities for adults ages 50 and older. College for Older Adults is perfect for lifelong learners, those curious about the world around them, people interested in trying new things or making new connections, and anyone who enjoys planned outings and activities.

Melanie Gilbert, assistant manager for community engagement programs, said that College for Older Adults sessions are now four weeks in length in contrast to the six-week sessions that have been historically offered. “Shortening the sessions is a direct response to our attendees’ requests. A four-week span allows instructors to provide robust information without seeing a decline in attendance at the end of their courses. Since making the switch, we’ve seen much better participation, engagement, and retention.”

The variety of opportunities this session includes hiking, cultural culinary cooking, tai chi, adult recess, book talks, and a variety of arts and crafts classes. The full schedule of classes and activities is posted on the Reynolds Homestead website. Many classes are expected to reach capacity, so prompt registration is suggested.

The membership fee for COA is $60 and includes tuition for all weekly classes along with specialty one-time offerings. Some classes such as art/crafts classes, make and takes, and field trips may have additional supply or transportation fees. A hiking track is available for $25 and includes four guided hikes.

Payments may be made online by credit or debit card, or via check made payable to Treasurer of Virginia Tech. Online and printable registration options can be accessed from the Reynolds Homestead’s Facebook page and website. Paper catalogs are available at Reynolds Homestead, the Patrick County Chamber of Commerce, and Blue Ridge Regional Library.

The 2026 spring session is sponsored by the Landmark Center of Stuart, which serves the community by specializing in assisted living services, and Wills on Wheels of Virginia, which specializes in estate planning. For more information or if you are a person with a disability requesting accommodation, contact Melanie Gilbert via email at mtgilbert68@vt.edu or by calling 276-694-7181×22.
