DOUGLAS E. CASSELL SR.
Douglas E. Cassell Sr., 68, of Patrick Springs, died Sunday, March 19, 2017, at his home.
He was born on April 21, 1948 in Patrick County, a son of the late Claude Otis Cassell and the late Geneva Craig Cassell. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Michael Cassell, and a sister, Frances Chaney.
He attended Goodwill Baptist Church, was a Sunday school teacher and helped with the bus ministry for over 30 years. He also was the music and choir director at the church and enjoyed playing his guitar and singing in church.
Surviving his loving wife of 41 years, Susan Clark Cassell; two daughters; Amanda Hill and Pamela Bishop; one son, Douglas Cassell Jr.; ten grandchildren; five brothers, Claude, Coy, Jimmy, David and Donnie Cassell; and three sisters, Virginia Dale Snow, Shirlene McCallister and Patricia Sowers.
The visitation will be tonight (Wednesday) from 6 to 8 p.m. at Goodwill Baptist Church. The funeral service will be conducted Thursday, March 23 at 2 p.m. at Goodwill Baptist Church with Pastor David Bishop and Dr. David Towler officiating. Burial will follow in the Cassell family cemetery.

LARRY K. HANDY
Larry Kyle Handy, age 66, of Patrick Springs, passed away Friday, March 17, 2017, at his home.
He was born in Patrick County on August 10, 1950 to the late Noel Jasper Handy and Velma Virginia Layman Handy.
He was a former superintendent of the Martinsville Prison Farm and had served in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles.
Surviving are his wife, Wanda Setliff Handy of Stuart; three daughters, Stephanie Handy Burton of Glade Hill, Crystal Foley Wagoner and husband Chris of Stuart, and Misty Light and fiancé Shawn Taylor of Stuart; one son, Robert Vance Foley of Stuart; four grandchildren, Lauren Wood, Jenna Burton, Easton Light, Adara Taylor; one sister, Shirlene Layman of Stuart; two brothers, Leon Handy and wife Eleanor, an Ricky Handy and fiancée Kimberly Griffin; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 21, at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart. Burial was in the Patrick Memorial Gardens with military rites by the Patrick County Veterans’ Memorial Honor Guard.

JABE H. HARRIS
Jabe Harman Harris, 80, of Martinsville, died Wednesday, March 15, 2017, at the Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County.
He was born May 21, 1936 in Patrick County to the late Martin Emory Harris Sr. and the late Gertrude Dillon Harris. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Martin E. Harris Jr.
He is survived by his wife, Betty Harris; son, Bob Harris; stepson, H. D. Linkous; two grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Lucille H. Akers and Louise H. Marion.
A graveside service was held Monday at Roselawn Burial Park.
The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Willis Memorial Baptist Church music program, 5212 Cascade Road, Cascade, VA 24069

DEMRIS W. HOLT
Demris Wood Holt, 92, of Fieldale, died on Tuesday, March 14, 2017.
She was born on August 24, 1924 in Stuart and was a daughter of the late Oscar and Myrtle Wood. She was also preceded in death by her sisters, Arlene Smith and Doris Holt; brothers, Hoy Wood, Glen Wood, Donald Wood, and Aaron Wood.
She was a member of Fieldale United Methodist Church.
She is survived by her husband of 70 years, Coy Lester Holt of the residence; daughters, Cecelia Tyndall of Martinsville, Judy Gillespie of Fieldale, and Kay Smith of High Point, N.C.; one sister, Violet Elgin of Patrick Springs; one brother, Marion Wood of Stuart; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren
A funeral service was held Friday at Norris Funeral Services, Martinsville Chapel with Pastor Janet Grissett officiating. Burial was in Roselawn Burial Park

MARIE L. JUDSON
Marie Lewis Hooker Judson passed away peacefully at RidgeCrest Assisted Living on March 15, 2017, after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s. She had been a resident there since 2014.
She was born in Patrick County and was a long-time resident of Mount Airy, N.C., where she graduated from Mount Airy School in 1941.
She was preceded in death by parents, George and Ethel Hull Lewis; husbands, Joseph Howard Hooker (1969) and Dave Judson (1991); brothers, Bill Lewis, Troy Lewis, Harold Lewis; and sisters, Julia Coins, Mildred Raulston, Ruby Booker.
She was instrumental in organizing the ladies auxiliary at Northern Hospital of Surry County. As a former employee of Northern Hospital insurance department she implemented the first Medicare program for the hospital.
Marie was a life time member of the American Freedom Association where she assisted with the N.C. High School World Peace Speaking Contest and was a chaperone for their yearly trips to the United Nations and Washington, D.C. She was instrumental in organizing the Mount Airy High School women’s golf team.
She was a member of the Mount Airy Women’s Club, and an active member of the Mount Airy Chapter of the P.E.O., a philanthropic organization.
Surviving are her daughters; Donna Grady-Moore and June Grogan, and son Joe Hooker; stepsons Rick Judson and Bill Judson; stepdaughters; Sherry Harris and Jan Johnson . She is also survived by 15 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Dellie Lewis, and a number of nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to thank all those who provided wonderful care for her at RidgeCrest during the last two and a half years, and the kind-hearted nurses and doctors at Northern Hospital of Surry County.
The funeral service was held Sunday at the First Presbyterian Church in Mount Airy with the Rev. Griff Gatewood officiating. Burial was at Oakdale Cemetery

SARAH Q. LEMKE
Sarah Quilling Lemke, of Tomahawk, Wisc., passed away on her 101st birthday at Blue Ridge Therapy Connection in Stuart.
She was born March 16, 1916 in Menomonie, Wisc., to the late Fredrick and Fannie Quilling. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Darrel C. Lemke Sr.; twin sister Jane Podvin; sister Virginia Fenner; brother, Fred Quilling, and sister Helen Schielke.
She and her husband both taught and retired from the Milwaukee public school system. They lived out their retirement years in Tomahawk.
She is survived by her daughter, Maxine (and Don) Payne of Acton, Mass.; her son, Darrel Jr. (and Phyllis) Lemke of Stuart; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

WILLIAM C. PILSON
William Clyde Pilson, age 98, of Stuart, passed away Sunday, March 19, 2017, at his home.
He was born in Patrick County on April 25, 1918 to the late William Royal Pilson and Nettie Pendleton Pilson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Annie Mae Morrison Pilson; a son-in-law, Bobby Steagall; a brother, Oscar Pilson; and four sisters, Mae Baliles, Rosie Belcher, Minnie Belcher, and Eula Pilson.
Clyde served in the U.S. Army during World War II, was a charter member of Fairystone Baptist Church, and loved to play music.
Surviving are his daughter, Myrtle Steagall of Stuart; one grandson, Phillip Steagall of Stuart; one sister, Virginia Wright of Stuart; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 21 at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with Pastors Kriss Foley, Richard Dobson, and Amos Morrison officiating. Burial was in the Sycamore Baptist Church Cemetery with military rites by the Patrick County Veterans’ Memorial Honor Guard.

S. ROGERS REYNOLDS
Rogers (Rod) Reynolds died on Monday, March 13, 2017 at the VA Hospital in Oklahoma City, Okla.
He was born September 16, 1935 in Patrick County.
He is survived by his sons, Rogers Reynolds of Greensboro N.C., Lance Reynolds of Edmond, Okla.; daughters, Audrey Reynolds-Callahan of Cary, N.C. and Karen Reynolds of Greensboro, N.C.; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Manuela “Kika” Reynolds, who lived in New York, N.Y. and his parents, William and Julia Reynolds, who lived in Patrick County.
The family will have a private ceremony at the Reynolds family cemetery this summer.
MARGOT D. SAMS
Margot Dominic Sams, 87, of Mount Airy, N.C., died Saturday, March 18, 2017, at Blue Ridge Nursing Center in Stuart.
She was born July 14, 1929 in Germany and was a member of St. Andrew Lutheran Church.
Surviving are three step-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; a stepson; Jeffrey Vann and Crystal Watson, and a sister, Heidi Franz.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband; Earl Ray Sams, a son; Benjamin Sams, a stepson; Lendon Brent Watson, and her companion; Clayton Watson.
A funeral service was held Tuesday at St. Andrews Lutheran Church with services conducted by the Rev. Dale Cline. Burial was in Oakdale Cemetery.

Samantha Gayle Smith, 27, of Collinsville, died Monday, March 13, 2017.
She was born on August 12, 1989, in Patrick County to Brenda Gunter Smith and the late Danny Smith. In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her grandmother, Patricia Edwards, and uncle, Roger L. Smith.
She is survived by her mother; two daughters, Cheyenne and Evelyn; son, Jacob; brothers, Herbie Dillon Jr. and Logan Fontaine; and sisters, Valery Smith and Jessica Giffin.
She was employed by Springs Global and attended Community Fellowship Church.
A memorial service was held on Thursday at Wright Funeral Service Chapel.
DAVID R. STONE
David Randolph Stone, 59, of Huntingtown, Md. died on Tuesday, February 28, 2017 at his residence.
He was born on July 29, 1957 in Richmond and grew up in Martinsville with his parents, Eugene and Peggy Stone, and younger brother Tommy. He was preceded in death by his father Eugene D. Stone.
He is survived by daughters, Hannah Stone of Georgia and Ashley VonClausburg of California; brother, Tom Stone of Collinsville and mother, Peggy L. Stone of Blue Ridge Nursing, Stuart.
His life was honored and celebrated on Saturday, March 4, at Emmanuel Church in Huntingtown,. and Saturday, March 18, at The Axton Lodge (The Pines) in Axton.
