Patrick County is one of 53 school divisions in Virginia in which all schools are fully accredited, according to a news release from the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE).
The county’s seven public schools are among 81% of schools in the commonwealth that are fully accredited.
“More than eight out of 10 Virginia public schools are now fully accredited as the result of improved performance of students on Standards of Learning (SOL) tests and 2016 legislation providing multi-year accreditation for schools that have consistently met the commonwealth’s accountability standards,” the VDOE news release stated.
“Eighty-one percent, or 1,482, of Virginia’s 1,825 public schools are rated as fully accredited for 2016-2017, a three-point improvement over 2015-2016, when 78% of schools earned the state’s top accountability rating,” the release said.
“I hope these results will encourage teachers, principals and other educators in all of our schools as they strive to help students meet Virginia’s high expectations for learning and achievement,” said Steven R. Staples, superintendent of public instruction.
For a school to earn full accreditation, students must achieve adjusted pass rates (or benchmarks) of at least 75% on English reading and writing SOL tests, and at least 70% on mathematics, history and science tests.
Ratings are based on the achievement of students on tests taken during the previous academic year, or on a three-year average of achievement. Patrick County’s results show pass rates for 2014-2015, 2015-2016, and 2016-2017. High schools are fully accredited if students achieve the required pass rates in English, math, history and science, and also if they attain a point value of 85 or greater based on the Graduation and Completion Index (GCI).
