A large group of bat lovers attended a program by Southwest Piedmont Master Naturalists and Friends of Fairystone State. Bat House 101 was held at Fayerdale Hall on Feb. 15. A presentation about the benefits of bats and bat behavior was presented, and bat houses were assembled from kits made at the park. The houses will be installed in the park to encourage a healthy bat population.
Bats are an important part of the ecosystem and are the only flying mammal they can live up to 30 years. Bats can eat thousands of insects a night and they are wonderful for natural insect control. The types of bats most likely to be seen in the park are Little Brown Bat, Big Brown Bat and Little Red Bat.
Another bat program and the unveiling of the installed bat houses is scheduled for April 176 at the park. Check the Friends of Fairystone and Fairystone State Park Facebook pages for additional upcoming programs.
