Break out your platform shoes, your leisure suit and your mini (or maxi) skirt: the ’70s are back at The Arts Place of Stokes located at 502 N. Main Street, Danbury, N.C.
The newly-christened Arts Place in Danbury will ring with the sounds of classic rock and pop on Saturday, March 11, as the Stokes County Arts Council’s 2017 Winter Dessert Theatre season concludes with “Bell Bottom Girls,” a music revue spotlighting the hits of the 1970s. Two performances of this new revue are scheduled: 3 p.m. and 7 p.m.
The two-hour show features almost 40 chart-topping songs from the decade, including “Old Time Rock and Roll,” “Joy to the World,” “Desperado,” “Crocodile Rock,” “Superstition” and “You Don’t Mess Around With Jim.” Female artists are spotlighted in numbers like “You’re So Vain,” Sister Sledge’s “We Are Family” and the Carole King classic “I Feel The Earth Move.”
The mellower side of the ’70s is represented in performances of the Carpenters’ “Top of the World,” America’s “Ventura Highway” and “Landslide” by Fleetwood Mac.
And of course, no tribute to the ’70s would be complete without disco music.
“Bell Bottom Girls” features a mini-set of danceable disco tunes like “Blame It On The Boogie,” “Dancing Queen” and “Boogie Shoes,” plus a disco medley with a surprise or two.
The “Bell Bottom Girls” are members of the NoneSuch Playmakers, a local theatre Company that has been part of the Winter Dessert Theatre season for several years.
Last March the quartet (performing as “The Treblemakers”) presented a 1960s music revue entitled “Feelin’ Groovy” at the Dogwood Center in King. The March 11 show marks the group’s first performances in the Arts Place.
“The Treblemakers” are Elizabeth Martin, Cindy Southern Marion, Angela Llewellyn and Shanna Hiatt Jones.
Enhancing the ’70s vibe of the revue is a series of photos, animations and video that will be projected behind the singers. The visual component was created by NoneSuch veteran Brian Greene. It includes more than 250 images. There will also be a “pre-performance” slide show with hundreds of pictures from the 1970s.
Shane Sargent will provide sound for the show. Jessica Llewellyn is the spotlight operator.
“Bell Bottom Girls” was directed by NoneSuch co-founder Brack Llewellyn, who also serves as the deejay introducing the songs and the singers.
The “Treblemakers” encourage audience members to come dressed in their ’70s best, and to take the floor and dance.
“We want it to be a party, a celebration of this great decade and its music,” says director Llewellyn. “Whether you’re a child of the 70s, or just wish you had been, we think you’ll enjoy our show. The theme of the night is just plain fun.”
The Stokes County Arts Council and the North Carolina Arts Council are sponsors of the 2017 Winter Dessert Theatre. Dr. Mark Johnson and Artist’s Way Creations & Bakery are the dessert sponsors for “The Bell Bottom Girls” production. Desserts are available beginning one hour before each production. Tickets are: $12 for general admission, $10 for SCAC members, $5 for students (K-12).
