An enthusiastic large group of citizen scientists of all ages searched for wildlife during the recent Bio Blitz at Fairystone State Park. A BioBlitz is an event that focuses on finding and identifying as many species as possible in a specific area over a short period of time. Findings are recorded and uploaded to a data base for future reference.
The diverse wildlife in Fairystone Park didn’t disappoint with the identification of many plant and animal species including macroinvertebrates, reptiles, amphibians, fish, birds, and mammals, and a variety of plants.
The event was organized and led by Jessica Bickwell of Fairystone State Park and assisted by Herpetologist Dr. Adriana Kuhn, of the Virginia Museum of Natural History, Master Naturalists, Master Gardeners, Park Rangers, DRBA and many citizen scientist volunteers. Contact the park to take part in future Bio Blitzes and other park activities.
