The Blue Ridge Music Center will celebrate Independence Day with a free event from noon to 4 p.m., Sat., July 4, with music, demonstrations, and more.

In celebration of the country’s 250th birthday, visitors of all ages are invited to enjoy a free concert with old-time string band the Mustard Cutters and educational programs by National Park Service Interpretive Ranger Conrad Shirk and interpreter Aubrey Arrington on the Music Center plaza.

The Mustard Cutters, known for their danceable songs, features Gina Dilg on fiddle, Tyler Hughes and Ivy Sheppard on guitar and banjo, and Hasee Ciaccio on bass. Tyler Hughes will call a couple of square dances.

Shirk will share the story of the Overmountain Men, a Patriot militia that marched from the mountains to fight the British at the battle of Kings Mountain in South Carolina during the American Revolutionary War. Find out what it took to be a part of the militia and walk through a drill that was associated with muster.

Arrington will share his hands-on presentation “The Science Behind Stringed Instruments.”

A part of the Backstories series, this Music Center presentation is supported by a Central Appalachia Living Traditions grant from Mid Atlantic Arts.
