A recent Storytime event at the library included a special field trip to the Mayo River Trail.
Children and their adults spread out blan kets in the grass to hear a number of books read by Children’s Librarian Miss Lisa, including “I Love Bugs,” by Emma Dodd, “Look! Bugs!,” By Stephanie Calmenson, and “The Girl Who Loves Bugs,” by Lily Murray.
Norma Bozenmayer then led the bug inspired program.
The young children learned that bugs are im portant for birds to feed their babies frogs, fish and salamanders to eat and for flower pollina tion. All bugs are important to life on earth.
The children recited the Bug Protector Pledge: “I promise to be gentle and kind to all bugs I meet in the world.”
Youngsters used a magnifying glass and a bug catcher to go on a Bug Hunt. They observed many different kinds of bugs found in the grass. Some special finds were lightning bugs, a big beetle, a wolf spider and a moth. They patiently waited by a little ant hill to observe a mighty ant.
All bugs were released unharmed at the end of the program.
The children were shown the new Birds But terfly and Bug bucket containing materials for special nature activities by the river. It’s avail able for all young naturalists to use. Find it at the center kiosk near the River Ranger Buckets.
