Cao secures GOP nomination

Hung Cao will face incumbent U.S. Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Richmond, in the November election.

After handily winning the June 18 Republican Primary in Patrick County and other areas of Virginia, Hung Cao will face off against incumbent U.S. Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Richmond, in November.

In Patrick County, Cao received 62.44 percent of the vote with 369 ballots, according to the Virginia Department of Elections.

Edward C. “Eddie” Garcia Jr. garnered 77 votes, or 13.03 percent. C.L. “Chuck” Smith Jr. received 11.68 percent of the votes, with 69 ballots; Scott Thomas Parkinson received 7.28 percent and 43 votes and Jonathan W. Emord earned 5.58 percent, or 33 votes. 

In Virginia, Cao received 61.79 percent, or 168,748 ballots. The second top vote-getter was Parkinson with 10.95 percent and 29,918 ballots, followed by Garcia, with 9.79 percent and 26,747 votes; Smith with 8.82 percent and 24,087 ballots and Emord with 8.64 percent and 23,601 votes, according to the state website.
