Tuesday, May 20

The Patrick County Department of Social Services (DSS) Advisory Board will meet at 4 p.m. in the second floor conference room of the Patrick County Administration Building.

Thursday, May 1

National Day of Prayer Gathering at the steps of the old courthouse in Stuart, 12-12:30 p.m.

In case of rain, the venue will be the Stuart Church of Living Water (Formerly Stuart UMC).

 

Friday, May 2

The community food truck will be at the Woolwine SRRS from 3-4 p.m. 

 

Brothers In Arms: J. E. B. Stuart and his brothers in the Civil War by Tom Perry, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., Ararat Ruritan Club, 4711 Ararat Highway, Ararat. Perry will discuss the lives of Major General James Ewell Brown “Jeb” Stuart and his brothers, William Alexander Stuart, who ran the saltworks in Saltville, Virginia, and Dr. John Dabney Stuart, who served as a physician in the 54th Virginia Infantry during the War Between The States. Programs are free. 

 

Saturday, May 3

To celebrate national VFW Day of Service, VFW Post 7800 will clean up the Shelton Family Cemetery. Anyone interested in helping should meet at VFW Post 78000 at 10 a.m. Participants are recommended to wear boots, gloves, and eye protection. Jeb Stuart Volunteer Rescue Squad, 1258 American Legion Road, Stuart, will hold a community breakfast from 7:30-10 a.m. Plates are $10 and dine in, carry out, and curb service options are available. Orders can be placed by calling (276) 694-6171.

 

Meadows of Dan Women’s Club will hold a Bingo event at the Meadows of Dan Community Center, 2858 JEB Stuart Hwy, Meadows of Dan. Doors open at 5 p.m. and games start at 6 p.m. Food will be available for purchase. For more information, call (276) 952-2674 or (276) 952-6395.

 

Monday, May 5

The Ararat Ruritan Club will hold a Cinco de Mayo Tacos2Go (or eat-in) from 4:30-7 p.m. at the Ararat Ruritan Club. Tacos are $3 and margaritas are $2. Proceeds will go to help fund the group’s ongoing community service projects.

 

Tuesday, May 6

The Patrick County Chamber of Commerce will hold a Lunch & Learn at 12 p.m. at the Patrick & Henry Community College (P&HCC) Stuart site. The workshop will focus on pre-venture planning for entrepreneurs and it’s free.

 

Thursday, May 8

The Patrick County Senior Citizens Group will hold its May meeting at 11 a.m. in the Hooker Building at Rotary Field in Stuart. Entertainment will be provided by Mary Jo and Charlie Leake. Beverages will be provided. The menu is potluck so attendees are requested to bring their favorite meats, vegetables, and/or desserts to share with the group.  

 

Saturday, May 10

The Patrick County Master Gardener’s annual plant sale will be held from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the Rotary Building in Stuart. Plants start at $2 and will include flowers, vegetables, shrubs, trees, groundcovers, and bulbs.

 

Wednesday, May 14

The Patrick County Food Bank will distribute food at the Stuart site from 8:30-11 a.m. and from 5-6:30 p.m., at the Fellowship Church in Ararat from 8-10 a.m., and starting at 5:30 p.m. at the Community Building in Meadows of Dan.

 

Friday, May 16

The community food truck will be at the Fairystone VFD from 3-4 p.m.

 

Ongoing

The Coffee Break Café hosts live music on Tuesdays from 9 to 11 a.m. Bring an instrument, or just come and listen.

 

Patrick County Alzheimer’s Group LLC is open Monday, Wednesday & Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. During opening hours an inside yard sale is open to the public. Proceeds from the yard sales are used to purchase supplies. Members meet on the first Monday of every month at 6 p.m. in the Alzheimer’s office, located on Wood Brothers Drive, in the basement of Hills Tax Service. New members are welcome. Two branches of the Alzheimer’s Group LLC have been established in the Vesta and Ararat communities. The Ararat group meets at the Fellowship Church in Ararat on the second Thursday each month at 12 p.m. The Vesta group meets at the Vesta Community Center on the third Tuesday each month at 12 p.m. Both groups welcome new members and invite caregivers to attend these meetings to listen and learn how to deal with the effects of Alzheimer’s Disease. Literature is also available.

 

The Patrick County Quilters’ Sit-N-Sew, Saturdays from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Quilted Colors. For more information, call (276) 694-3020 or email patrickcountyquilters@gmail.com.

 

The Ararat Ruritan Club holds Rook games every Monday night from 6:30-8 p.m.

 

The Patrick County Veterans Memorial Honor Guard meets the first Tuesday of every month at the American Legion Post 105 at 7 p.m. Interested veterans are welcome to attend.

 

Free Community Meal, every 4th Wednesday, 5 p.m., Raven Rock Wesleyan Church, 1912 Raven Rock Road, Ararat. Take out or dine in. Call Scott or Nann Phillips at (276) 773-6004 or email pastor@ravenrockchurch.org.

 

The Carroll County Genealogy Club is open 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

 

The Willis Gap Community Center: Members Meeting, the first Monday of the month at 6:30 p.m.; Appalachian Acoustic Open Jam, every Friday. Doors open at 6 p.m. for food. The music and dancing are 6:30-9 p.m.; Golden Oldies Open Jam is on the last Tuesday of the month. Doors open at 6 p.m. for food, music and dancing from 6:30-9 p.m.

 

Connect Health+ Wellness offers free confidential Medicaid/FAMIS application and renewal assistance for Virginia residents from birth to 64. No sign-up fees, no premiums, no deductibles. Medicaid renewals have resumed. Medicaid members need to keep their mailing address and contact information up to date. Patrick County Senior Citizens is sponsoring two upcoming trips — three-days, two-nights to Lancaster, Pa., June 18–20, and a one-day trip on August 2 is planned to NarroWay Dinner Theatre, Fort Mill, South Carolina. For more information, call (276) 694-3917.

 

Salem Church on Salem Road in Critz will hold a community meal on the first Sunday of every month at 12:10 p.m.  Call (276) 222-1069 with questions.

 

The Patrick County Senior Citizens sponsored trip on Saturday, August 2 to NarroWay Dinner Theatre located in Fort Mill, S.C. has a few available seats. The deadline for registration and payment of the $110 cost is June 15. To register for the trip, call trip coordinator Judy Lacks at 276-694-4767.

 

The Patrick County Senior Citizens are sponsoring a two day, one night trip to the Abingdon and Bristol areas of southwest Virginia departing Tuesday, November 18 and returning Wednesday, November 19. The trip will include chartered bus transportation, shopping opportunities at Thee Draper Village located in Draper, Virginia, one night’s accommodation, one buffet dinner, and one breakfast at the historic Martha Washington Inn in Abingdon, admission to the 4-mile Bristol Motor Speedway’s “Speedway in Lights” featuring 3 million Christmas lights and Christmas Village, admission to the Barter Theatre’s Christmas Show entitled “Elf: The Musical,” baggage handling, all taxes, and all gratuities.
