Even though the Patrick County High School golf team has competed in one district match, the Cougar golfers and Floyd County Buffaloes started a tradition last year where the two teams compete at Olde Mill Golf Course for a round of match play. They call it the Pre-Season Match Play Challenge where the players on each team play head-to-head to determine who wins the tournament.
This year, the Cougars won 7-3, the second year in a row.
Winners for the Cougars included Thatcher Blankenship, Wesley Diggs, David Smith, Daniel Smith, Jacob Lovell, Nate Scott and Jalen Hagwood.
“We decided to start this pre-season match-up last year to add some fun to our scrimmage with Floyd,” said Coach Philip Steagall. “It gives the players the opportunity to get to know their opponents a little better as well as make it a fun way to open the season,” he said.
This week the Cougars played a district match at Forest Park yesterday (Tuesday). Sunday, August 20, the Cougars will travel to Green Folly Golf Course to play Halifax County.
