The Patrick County High School golf team traveled to Green Folly Country Club to play Halifax County and the remainder of the Piedmont District teams last Tuesday and finished third in the eight-school event.

Franklin County won the match with a score of 297, and Halifax finished second with a 302. The Cougars scored 332 for third place. Magna Vista, Tunstall and Bassett rounded out the next three spots. Martinsville and George Washington of Danville did not have enough players for a team but competed with individuals.

Jarrod Burnette led the Cougars with an 80. Daniel Smith was close behind with an 81. Wesley Diggs shot an 85 and Evan Hopkins scored 86.

“We played quite well with many of our players playing this course for the first time Tuesday,” said Coach Philip Steagall. “I think our scores were good for the first time playing here.”.

Thursday, the Cougars played a quad match against Salem, Pulaski and Carroll County at Olde Mill Golf Course.

The Cougars led the scoring in the nine-hole match, scoring 159. Salem was second with 176, followed by Pulaski (178) and Carroll County (201).

Evan Hopkins was two under par with a 35; he was the medalist for the match. Daniel Smith shot 38, followed by Wesley Diggs’ 40 and Thatcher Blankenship’s 44.

“We played really well today, doing many of the things we have been working on for the past several weeks,” said Steagall. “I am looking forward to the continued improvements in the upcoming weeks,” he added.

This week the Cougars traveled to GW of Danville Tuesday and will host Carroll County at Olde Mill at 4 p.m. Thursday.
