The Patrick County High School indoor track team had a very good day on the track at the 3A West Regional Championships at Tolsma Track Center in Lynchburg last weekend.
“We are proud to be sending two relay teams (girls’ 4×800 and girls’ 4×400) and two individuals (Savannah Moorefield and Emma Hubbard) to the 3A State Meet this weekend,” said Coach Danel Slaydon.
The girls started off the day with a solid 4×800 race. The foursome of Savannah Moorefield, Montana Moorefield, Macie Rogers and Emma Hubbard ran to a second place finish in a very strong field of 12 teams.
In the 500m race, Savannah Moorefield powered her way past two competitors in the final 50 meters to claim third place and earn a trip to the state meet.
Ethan Gilbert ran a very smart and very aggressive race in the boys’ 500 to finish 10th, but it was not enough to propel him to the coveted top-six. “His race was a heartbreaker for sure. He ran perfectly, and was incredibly tough from start to finish,” said Slaydon.
“The 500 was very deep on the boys’ side this year, with less than half-second separating sixth and 10th place,” he added.
Emma Hubbard qualified for the state meet in the 1000m race after running to a fourth place finish.
The girls 4×400 team (M. Moorefield, S. Moorefield, Rogers and Hubbard) ran a phenomenal race to end the meet. They came in seeded seventh, and clawed their way to a third place finish. It was, without a doubt, the most exciting race of the day.
“All four girls raced with a tremendous amount of heart and guts. That is exactly the type of attitude that we need to take with us to Lynchburg this weekend,” Coach Kali Slaydon said.
The girls’ team placed sixth overall out of the 25 best teams in the 3A West Region.
“This is a huge accomplishment for our program, especially considering we placed that well on the backs of just four young ladies,” Kali Slaydon said.
Other PCHS results were as follows: Macie Rogers: 11th (mile); Arielle Taylor: 15th (mile); Montana Moorefield: 10th (1,000); Juan Cisneros: 10th (mile); and Shane Spencer: 13th (shot put).
