The Patrick County Varsity Baseball Team defeated Bassett 12-5 on the road Thursday, May 20.

Patrick County was down 1-5, but scored 11 in the last 4 innings to take the win.

Garrett Leftwich took the win on the mound in relief, allowing no runs on 1 hit, striking out 7.

Leftwich came on in relief of Tucker Swails, who was getting his first varsity start. Swails went 3 innings, giving up 5 runs, 4 unearned, on 4 hits, and striking out 6.

The Cougars had a big night at the plate, pounding out 12 hits.

Jai Penn, Nash Thompson, and Carson Merriman had 2 hits each.  Lane Taylor had 3 RBIs. Thompson, Merriman, and Taylor Swails had 2 each.

Coach Tal Swails said, “I really hope today was a turning point in our season.  We could have hung our heads when things didn’t go well early.  We could have let those couple of errors and bad breaks finish us off, but we didn’t.  We tightened up and really came together and put together 4 great innings, breaking it open in the 5th when we scored 6 runs.  Really proud of my guys today!”

The Cougars hosted Tunstall on Tuesday, May 25.
