Patrick County High School hosted 10 teams at its home track meet last week. “The conditions for our meet were perfect, and we had great crowd turnout,‚” said Coach Danel Slaydon. “Our athletes turned in several victories, personal best and season’s best performances, which is really encouraging as we inch closer to the championship season.”

Lexy Carico improved her shot put personal record (PR) by a foot and qualified automatically for the state meet. Her throw was 35’5 ¬1/2″. She then competed Friday night at the All-American Relays in Radford and won the discus with a season’s best throw.

The girls’ team was first overall with a team score of 135 points; the nearest competitor was George Washington of Danville with 76 points. The boys’ team was third in a tightly packed scoring race.

“Track is a big numbers game, so for our girls to have won with only seven athletes, and our boys to have been a close third with nine athletes is just tremendous, especially considering we are competing against teams that have 20 or more kids on each roster,” Slaydon said. “What we lack in quantity, we make up for in quality. We were very proud of how our athletes competed and represented their school last week,” he added.

“The entire coaching staff would like to thank teachers, administrators, parents and friends of our athletes, and other community members for their support and for helping out meet to run so smoothly,” Slaydon added.

Top three results were as follows: Lexy Carico- 1st (discus-113′ 9″), 1st (shot put-35′ 5-1/2″); Molly Hernandez- 2nd (discus); Tyler Lumpkin- 1st (discus-105’3-1/2″); Matt Amos- 2nd (discus), 3rd (shot put); Hannah Roberson- 1st (high jump-4′ 8″); Ashton Collins- 1st (2 mile- 14:10.65); Macie Rogers- 1st (800-2:38.18), 2nd (mile); Armonte Carter- 1st (400-1:04.02), 3rd (200); Arielle Taylor- 2nd (800), 3rd (mile); Autumn Hubbard- 2nd (200), 2nd (shot put), 3rd (long jump); Juan Cisneros- 1st (800-2:11.98), 3rd (mile); Tommy Pauley- 2nd (400); Zach Montgomery- 3rd (400); Boys 4×400- 1st (3:45.72) (Biedrycki, Cisneros, Montgomery, Pauley); Girls 4×400- 1st (4:27.40) (Carter, Rogers, Taylor, Hubbard).
