Cougars split two games in baseball

The Patrick County High School baseball team played at Tunstall last Tuesday and lost to the Trojans 9-1. Wednesday, the Cougars hosted Martinsville and defeated the Bulldogs 15-1 in five innings.

In Tuesday’s game, the Trojans captured an early 3-0 lead in the first inning on a homerun and held the Cougars scoreless until one runner crossed home in the third inning.

Tunstall added one run in the fifth and five more in the sixth to total nine runs.

Seth Scott drove in Thatcher Blankenship in the third inning.

Caleb Pendleton took the loss on the mound for the Cougars. He pitched 5-2/3 innings, gave up 11 hits and struck out two.

In Wednesday’s home game against Martinsville, the Cougars scored five runs in the first inning to Martinsville’s one run. The Cougars added three in the second inning, two in the third and five in the fourth for the 15-1 five-inning win.

Evan Hopkins led Cougar batters with two hits; he had two RBIs and scored three runs. Caleb Pendleton had three hits, scored two runs and one RBI.

Austin Vernon had four RBIs and Logan Keen added three.

Austin Vernon claimed the win on the mound. He pitched three innings and struck out five batters.

Aaron Pack pitched two innings; he struck out three batters.

Conference play opens this week.
