The Stuart Town Council approved increasing its contribution for the annual July 4 fireworks display by $500 at its Wednesday, July 16 meeting.

While the contribution has normally been $1,000, Town Manager Bryce Simmons said with the success of the fireworks he believes it would be beneficial to increase it to $1,500.

“That’s just my opinion. The fireworks themselves were close to $10,000, and the county primarily foots that, or they completely foot that expense,” he said.

Simmons believes increasing the contribution would also be a show of good faith on behalf of the town as the display brings a lot of people to Stuart to watch the show.

The motion passed with a unanimous vote.

In other matters, the council:

*Approved two ads for the next edition of the Patrick County magazine.

*Discussed delinquent utility bills.

*Discussed inoperable vehicles within the town.

*Heard an update on public works projects.

*Discussed town policies.

*Heard an update on meals tax collection efforts.

*Approved the meeting minutes.

*Paid the bills.

Councilmember Erica Wade did not attend the meeting.
